Audition coaching
After taking professional orchestral auditions for more than 25 years, and more recently serving on the other side of the curtain on many audition committees with the San Francisco Symphony, I’ve learned a great deal about the process. My own audition journey was a rocky one: I made nearly every mistake imaginable before winning my first big job with the Nashville Symphony at age 30 and, later, my dream job with the San Francisco Symphony at 36.
Over the course of dozens upon dozens of auditions, I’ve stumbled in just about every aspect of preparation and execution. Even though it was incredibly frustrating and disheartening at the time, each misstep taught me something essential and ultimately shaped the musician I am today. While there is no substitute for hard work, solid instrumental fundamentals, musical imagination, and resilience, the audition process itself is a skill that must be honed like any other.
I often wonder how things might have unfolded if my younger self had known what I know now. That thought is what led me to start coaching other woodwind players, helping them navigate this challenging and often discouraging process, and offering the benefit of everything I’ve learned. Recently, I’ve helped many musicians refine their audition preparation, and several have gone on to win full-time professional positions.
Although my audition-preparation system is designed for those pursuing professional orchestral jobs, it’s never too early to begin. The same approach works equally well for music school and summer festival auditions. I offer coaching for all woodwind instruments.
Please contact me for more details or to schedule a coaching session. I offer services in person in San Francisco or online for all woodwind instruments.
